Its Hard To Remember What All The Michael Young Pre-Season Fuss Was All About

Shortly after the Texas Rangers acquired 3rd basemen Adrian Beltre this past off season Michael Young openly questioned where he fit in with the Texas Rangers' future and requested a trade. Ron Washington assured Young, the media, and Ranger fans that he had a plan. Rangers' General Manager Jon Daniels maintained since the day the Rangers' acquired Beltre there was plan for Michael Young as a Texas Ranger. Things got really dicey between Young and Daniels. So much so that Young said he felt "manipulated and misled". Shortly after this Daniels and Young sat down and were able to clear the air. Young credited Daniels for initiating the meeting which Michael said he "laid out in detail what I was feeling, what my concerns were [and] gave him an opportunity to do the same". Daniels felt it was a productive meeting and said, "I feel very good about decisions we made as an organization. We like the way the club sets up, but hate the way it played out." Twenty games into the regular season it appears Washington and Daniels plan for Young and the Texas Rangers is working. The Rangers are in first place in the American League West and are tied for the best record in the American League. Michael Young leads the team in at bats with 82 and a 366 batting average which is third best in the American League. Adrian Beltre, whose signing sparked Young's issues with Daniels and the Rangers, leads the Rangers and American league in runs batted in with 19. He leads the Rangers in home runs and is tied for second in the American League with 6. It's early in the season but the Ranger's decision to pick up Beltre and keep Young has already paid dividends. With Josh Hamilton on injured reserve the Rangers have not missed a beat. They lead all of the Major League Baseball teams in extra base hits with 75 and they are currently tied for second with the Cincinnati Reds in home runs. With the starting pitching at 3.19 and 4th best in all of baseball it is no wonder Jon Daniels feels good about the decisions the organization has made. Twenty games into the MLB season it's hard to believe anyone ever questioned Michael Young's future with the Texas Rangers. I myself am guilty of thinking there was not enough room to keep everyone happy but I don't have the experience or the success Ron Washington has had as a Manager or Jon Daniels has had as a General Manager. When Washington and Daniels say they have a plan for the future it is time for the Ranger fans, media and myself to believe they do have a plan and it is a plan that gives the Rangers the best chance for success. There is still a long season ahead but Washington and Daniels' plan to upgrade the 3rd base position and keep Michael Young on as a productive part of the Texas Rangers appears to be yet another success. The Rangers have put everyone in Major League Baseball on notice that they are going to keep on getting better. Even given the short history that Washington and Daniels have with the Rangers it's time that the rest of us to believe whatever plan they have is going to be a good one.

Coach Ressa Excited To Get Spring Training Under Way

Newman Smith has the first practice of spring training on Friday, April 29th. Coach Paul Ressa is ready to get going and says the 2011 edition could be his deepest team yet. That's a bold statement considering the 2009 and 2010 campaigns both reached the regional semi finals. The number of kids playing football is up at Newman Smith which can be attributed to the success coach Ressa and the Trojans have had the past two seasons. It's not just numbers, but quality numbers. Coach Ressa told me he has 70 varsity jerseys and just might suit up 70 varsity players next year. When asked who he expected to be the standouts this year he got a big smile on his face and said, "there is a lot of competing to be done in spring training. Ask me after spring training. We are deep at every position. I expect a whole lot of kids to compete for a job." Spring training begins April 29th and finishes up with the spring game on Friday, May 20th, 7:00pm at Standridge Stadium. The bar has definitely been raised at Newman Smith and expectations are running high for the 2011 season. Come get to get a early glimpse of the 2011 Trojans on May 20th and keep an eye out for possible pregame alumni events.

Are the Rangers the Favorite to Win the American League After the First Weekend of Baseball?

Before the beginning of the 2011 major league baseball season, it seemed like most of the so-called baseball "experts" were picking the Boston Red Sox to win the American league pennant. Nothing is ever settled in the first series of the season, but it looked like the Texas Rangers took exception to that. In fact a good majority of publications have the Red Sox beating the Oakland A's in the 2011 World Series- not the Rangers. Yet the Texas Rangers dispensed of the Boston Red Sox in the opening weekend outscoring them by a combined total of 26-11, while sweeping all three games. The Rangers had a team batting average of .333, with 34 hits and 11 home runs. What's more impressive is the Rangers did this with 3rd baseman Adrian Beltre batting .154 over the weekend, and defending American league MVP Josh Hamilton, hitting for one extra base hit. The Texas Rangers' batters are a murderer's row. Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz became the first team mates to ever hit a home run the first three games of the season. David Murphy was up to his old tricks from the 2010 season with only 5 at bats he had 2 runs, 3 RBIs and a home run. There are 10 batters on the Rangers that can hit the ball very well. In fact there is no other team in baseball that can hit the ball as well as Texas. Championships are not won in magazines before the season begins,  or the opening series of the season. The Rangers served notice that they intend to defend their first American League championship by sweeping that first series. Getting back to the World Series for the Rangers will depend on much more than the just hitting the ball. The Rangers still have questions at the pitching position. C J Wilson and Colby Lewis are the tested veterans in the starting rotation the 3-5 starters are all question marks. The number three starter, Matt Harrison got off to a nice start with a 5-1 win going 7 innings with 5 hits and 1 earned run. If he can pitch anywhere close to that the rest of the season he will be fine but last season he had some consistency issues. Harrison pitched his way to the number 3 spot in spring training going 2-0 with a 3.91 ERA. He held the opposition to .224 batting average during spring training. Some off season changes in Harrison's delivery seem to be paying dividends. The 4 and 5 starters Derrick Holland and Alexi Ogando have even more questions to answer. Both are bright young prospects. Ogando will be making his debut as a starter Tuesday against Seattle. He had a very promising year as a reliever in 2010. Holland will have to be more consistent than he was in 2010. The Rangers Neftali Feliz is one of the best young closers in baseball. He was the 2010 rookie of the year, and at 22 years old he might be the best pitcher on the staff. It's the relief pitching that really muddies the water. How the Ranger's relief pitching develops will go a long way in determining if the Rangers make it back to the World Series. Outside of a mid season trade for a top starter from a team that has thrown in the towel and wants to cut payroll, like last season's acquisition of Cliff Lee. The best chance for the 2011 Texas Rangers to get to the World Series and more is the development of the relief pitching staff and the 4th and 5th pitcher in the starting rotation.  The batters are going to have to hit. The Boston pitching staff is one of the best in the American league and the Ranger bats torched them for the second most home runs in an opening 3 game series in major league baseball history. If the young Ranger arms can pull their weight there will be more banners raised in Arlington this year and in the years to come.

400 Pound American Sumo Champion Finishes Marathon While Breaking Record

Kelly Gneiting is a three time " U.S. National Sumo Champion", who placed fifth at the 2006 world championships in Japan. He is now the world record holder as heaviest person to ever run a marathon and finish. In fact at 400 pounds he blew the former record holder of 275 pounds away. Gneiting who never doubted his ability to finish said, "I honestly think I'm one of the best athletes in the world," according to the LA Times. Gneiting had run a marathon in 2008 and finished in a time of 11 hours 52 seconds. He managed to beat that time by more than 2 hours running a time of 9 hours 48 minutes in the L.A. marathon. Gneiting said he became delirious from about the 10 mile marker on and had decided he would crawl to the finish if he had to.

Gillispie says Texas Tech is a "Great Fit".

New Texas Tech men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie thinks he will be successful as the Red Raiders head coach for multiple reasons. Gillispie said, "I'm a native Texan first of all. I'm a high school coach in this state. I coached at several different places in the college ranks in Texas, whether it's junior college or a major college, and I think it's just a great fit. I grew up as a Texas high school coach basically, and a lot of those guys are still coaching, and they're very, very dear friends and close friends. Spent time in the junior college ranks and developed a lot of relationships that are definitely going to help us in recruiting." If his track record at UTEP and Texas A&M are any indication, Red Raider basketball fans will see a difference immediately. Gillispie took both schools to the post season within the first two seasons he got there. His second season at UTEP, the Minors went 24-8 and to the NCAA tournament. His first year at Texas A&M the Aggies went 21-10 and earned a bid to the NIT tournament. The next two seasons Gillispie lead the Aggies to the NCAA tournament reaching the "sweet sixteen"  in 2006-2007 with a 27-7 record. Texas Tech basketball has seen a dip in success since Bobby Knight stepped down as the head basketball coach. If Gillispie's track record at the universities in the state of Texas is any indication, that is about to change

Football...a true love affair: A little about Kim Rogers, our football 101 author by Kim Rogers

Earlier this week my friend Shannan wrote on my Facebook page that I should be the sports correspondent on the g3 site.  Well guess what happened today?  Miss Kdee called and asked me to join the g3 team to write a sports column!  I am such a big sports fan, and I love to write, so this truly is an honor to have this forum.

I like most all sports, but it is football – specifically NFL football – that I am most passionate about.  Although I do enjoy college football, I find NFL football most exciting.  Many people [like our own KellyB] prefer college football, but for me there is no comparison!

Those of you who are my friend on Facebook, or who follow me on Twitter, know that I often include a sports reference in my status updates.  I have a coworker, Steven, who does not like sports and he told me I make too many posts about sports!  Seriously?  That is who I am!  He actually clicked the “less Kim” button and said that once football season is over, he will click the “more Kim” button.  Little does he know that I will continue to post about sports even when football season is over.  After all, sports – specifically football – is what consumes me!

Believe me, I realize that many other people besides Steven think I am crazy for being so passionate about something that most girls don't know much about.  I try to pinpoint when my love affair with football began, but I simply can’t.  Football was just always on the TV on Sundays when I was growing up in Dallas.  The affair grew stronger each year as I learned more and more about the game.  Even now I still learn new things, and every year my love grows deeper and deeper.

If you like football, hopefully you will enjoy my quips about the great game.  If you don’t, maybe they will help you understand what inspires your husband, father, brother and even mother and sister to be such a fan.

Jon Jones Takes Robber Down Hours Before Light Heavyweight Champonship Bout

Just hours before light heavyweight contender Jon Jones was to fight for the UFC championship of the world, he and two of his trainers, Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn spotted a man breaking into a car and stealing objects. When they started yelling at the man to stop, the robber took off running. Jones, Jackson and Winkeljohn  followed him on foot. The thief eventually fell down and by the time he was able to get up and continue running Jones had caught up to him and tripped him. According to Jackson he "foot swept" the suspect. With the robber on the ground Jackson yelled to his fighter to stay away. The suspect tried to get up so Jackson  said he "double-legged" him , jumped on top of him and applied an arm bar. Winkeljohn went after the other arm so the robber would not have a weapon. Shortly after the scuffle police showed up and arrested the thief. About 7 1/2 hours later Jones took on Mauricio Rua for the UFC  light heavyweight championship which he won. Not a bad day's work, Mr. Jones.

Just for Fun: My March Madness Championship Game Predictions. Who will be there and who will Win?

Like a lot of you this week I filled out my March Madness bracket. I have been doing brackets for 20+ years and in all those years I have had only one season of glory. In 2009 I was in a bracket that cost 20 dollars a person and paid 2600 plus for first place. The reason I mention this is so you have an idea how many people were in it. I was the only person that had Michigan St. playing North Carolina in the final. I had North Carolina winning which they did pretty easily. Believe it or not, it was a very surreal moment. I had won my bracket! I know there are other teams that have as good of a chance or better than both of the following teams. Kansas played consistent all season. Kansas was 32-2 and played in one of the best conferences in the country. Kentucky is much like Michigan in 2009 as far as the way they are playing down the stretch. They won the SEC tournament which is, and has always been one of the premier basketball conferences in the country for many years. They have won their last six games which included Florida twice, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Not exactly patsy row. Since February 15th the Wildcats are 8-1. So take it for what it's worth. The odds of me winning another bracket in my lifetime are probably not quite so high but you just never know. Good luck to all of you. I hope we have a lot of winners!

Kentucky @ Kansas

Winner: Kansas

Football 101 For Women- Understanding Downs by Kim Rogers Part 4 of a 10 Part Series

Ladies, this Football 101 column will be dedicated to helping you better understand the game of football by explaining the differences between and purposes of first down, second down, third down and fourth down.  This is probably the biggest key to understanding football, so if you grasp this, you’ll be watching football like an expert in no time!!The offensive team [the team in possession of the ball] has four attempts, or chances, to move the ball ten yards. These attempts are called downs.  From the time the ball is snapped, or put into play, to the time the play is whistled over by the officials, is considered one down.  Once the ball has moved ten yards or more from the starting point of play, the team gets a fresh set of four new downs to try to move the ball another ten yards. If the ball doesn’t move ten yards forward in four downs, the other team gets possession of the ball (the offense also has the option of kicking [punting] the ball to the other team on the fourth down).
The first play of a series is called first and 10 because it is the first down and 10 yards are needed to receive a new set of four downs.
Suppose on the first play, the team on offense picks up three yards. The next play would then be second and 7, because it is the second play of the set and they still need seven yards to get a first down [and a new set of four downs].
If they were to pick up six yards on the second play it would leave them one yard shy of a first down, therefore setting up a third and 1 situation because it would be the third play of the series and they would still need one yard to get a first down.
If the team with the ball can pick up one yard or more on the third down play, then they will be given a first down, which means they get to start all over with a new set of four downs.
A team can continue moving the football down the field as long as they continue to pick up first downs.
On occasion the yards to go may be a number other than 10, due to a penalty.
Third down with a significant distance to go (usually over 15 or 20 yards) is known as third and long.  This term is also often used in everyday life as a metaphor for a desperate situation that demands risky actions be taken.
Fourth down with less than one yard to go is referred to as fourth and inches. This is often used in tense situations where the offense is tempted to scrimmage the ball rather than kick for a chance to get another first down.
First down, where the goal line is the line to gain, is known as first and goal.  A team cannot make another first down (barring a defensive penalty) without actually scoring.
Fourth-down Strategies
If a team fails to gain the required yardage on third down, a team basically has 3 options on fourth down:
• The majority of the time, teams will "punt" the ball away on fourth down. A punt is simply a form of kicking the ball that gives possession of the ball to the other team, but also pushes them back considerably farther away from the end zone.
• A team can "go for it" on fourth down and try to pick up the remaining yardage, but they run the risk of turning the ball over to the other team if they do not get to the first down marker. If they do not get the required yardage, the other team takes possession of the ball at the spot of the last tackle and now has four downs to move 10 yards back in the other direction.
• Another option is to kick a field goal. If a team feels they are close enough to kick the ball between the upright bars of the goal post in their opponent's endzone, they may attempt a field goal, which is worth three points.
After a Score
• After a team scores via a touchdown or field goal, they kick off to the other team and the process begins all over again.

Ladies, I hope this info makes sense.  Watching football on Sundays is a great way to spend time with the man you love – and believe me, he will get a kick out of you taking interest in and enjoying football!!

Chris Johnson to NFL Owners: " Boy they need to let me kno what's gonna happen with this NFL lockout cause if they do ima join the us track team."

Chris Johnson ran a 4.24 forty yard dash as a senior at the NFL combine. It is the fastest forty ever recorded at an NFL combine. Chris Johnson expressed his desire to "try out" for the U.S. track team if there is an NFL work stoppage through his twitter account on March 9th, 2011. Running the fastest forty time of any football player at an NFL combine is one thing but running against the best sprinters in the world is a whole different thing. Isn't it? According to ESPN's "Sports Science" Chris Johnson's 40 yard dash was faster than Usain Bolt's first forty yards (sprinters usually reach top speed between 50-60 yds) of his world record 100 meter dash. I have heard the argument that football speed and track speed are two different things and that is true, but if Chris Johnson has enough God given ability to run faster than Bolt did the first forty yards of his world record 100 meter dash, then we're not talking about just any fast football player. Why shouldn't Chris Johnson give it a shot if the NFL has a work stoppage? Bob Hayes won an Olympic gold medal in the 100 yard dash in 1964, set the world record in  and won a Super Bowl championship with the Dallas Cowboys in 1972. Willie Gault won a gold medal on the 1984 Olympic 400 meter sprint relay team and later won a Super Bowl championship on one of the greatest teams in NFL history. The 1985 Chicago Bears. Like Johnson, Hayes and Gault were football players that had enough speed to compete on a world class level. Chris Johnson knows where his living should be made. All he is saying is let him know what's going. If there isn't going to be a season he would like to explore his options. Just like any of us would if the company we worked for told us we didn't have a job because they had decided to shut down shop for a  year. I hope we are watching Chris Johnson run for the Tennessee Titans next year, but if they don't play ball let's see what Johnson can do on the track. We will need something to watch besides Charlie Sheen.

Texas Tech Basketball coach Pat Knight fired?

Story out of Lubbock Texas: Sources have told Chris Level that Pat Knight has been fired! The season that started with high expectations and a lot of experienced seniors has ended abruptly for Pat Knight. A blow up in a press conference last week which Knight hinted his time in Lubbock was coming to end, has apparently come to pass. A 13-18  (5-11 conference) record by a team that was expected to contend in the Big 12 race seems to have brought an end to coaching tenure at Texas Tech. It is unclear if Knight will coach the Red Raiders when the Red Raiders play the number 6 seed Missouri Tigers this Wednesday.

Footbal 101 for Women- Scoring Part 3 of 10 By Kim Rogers

Ladies, do you try to watch football but find you have no clue what is going on?  You’ve heard of touchdowns and field goals, but do you know how they are made and how many points they each bring?  Help is here as this column was designed to give you a better understanding.
Touchdown
To score a touchdown, one team must take the football into the opposite end zone. This can be done by having a player run the football forward into the end zone. It can also be done when a receiver catches a pass in the end zone or catches the ball prior to the end zone and runs it in.  This would still be considered a "passing" touchdown as opposed to a "rushing" touchdown.
A touchdown is worth six points. The scoring team is also awarded the opportunity for an extra point or a two-point conversion.  Afterwards, the team scoring the touchdown kicks off to the opposing team.
Touchdowns are usually scored by the offense. However, the defense can also score a touchdown if they have recovered a fumble or an interception and return it to the opposing end zone. Special teams can score a touchdown on a kickoff or punt return, or on a return after a missed or blocked field goal attempt or blocked punt.
Extra point
This is played immediately after a touchdown during which the scoring team is allowed to attempt to score an extra one point by kicking or two points by touchdown.  An extra point is also referred to as a conversion, point after touchdown (sometimes abbreviated as PAT), or point after.  If the kick goes through the uprights, the team gets an additional one point for their touchdown, bringing their total for that score from six points to seven.
Two-point conversion
In a two-point conversion attempt, the team that just scored must run a play from close to the opponent's goal line and advance the ball across the goal line in the same manner as if they were scoring a touchdown. If the team succeeds, it earns two additional points on top of the six points for the touchdown. If the team fails, no additional points are scored. In either case, the team proceeds to a kickoff.  The ability to score a two-point conversion was added to NCAA football in 1958 and the NFL in 1994.
Field goal
A field goal must pass "through the uprights," a 10 feet crossbar with upright posts that are 18 feet 6 inches apart.  A missed field goal is said to be "no good."  If it misses to the kicker's left it is referred to as "wide left" and conversely "wide right" if it misses to the kicker's right. It may also be described as being "short" if it does not have the distance to go through the uprights.
Safety
A safety is a type of score worth two points where a team not in possession of the football can score points. A safety may occur in a variety of ways, most commonly when an opponent in possession of the football is tackled in his own end zone.  An official signals a safety by holding his hands above his head, palms touching.
A safety is by far the least common type of score.  No NFL team has ever recorded more than four in one season. Safeties usually occur when the offense starts a play close to its own end zone. In such cases, offenses tend to run very conservative, low-risk plays to avoid a safety.
Free kick
After a safety, the team that gave up the points kicks off to the other team from its own 20-yard line.  The kicking team has the option of employing a punt or a drop kick, and a punt is the most commonly chosen option.  Unlike the kickoff, a kicking tee may not be used.

Now that you have a better understanding how touchdowns and field goals are scored, watching football will be so much more fun – trust me!

Dave Duerson: A Sad End to a Great Life

If you were a football fan in the mid 80's chances are you knew who Dave Duerson was. He played defensive back for the '85 bears who won Super Bowl XX and is recognized as one of the greatest teams in NFL history. He later won another Super Bowl with the Giants in Super Bowl XXV. In 1986 he set an NFL record for most sacks by a defensive back, (7) and had the record until 2005. When I had heard he had killed himself by shooting himself in the chest so his brain would be spared for studies of long term affects of head trauma and that he had sent a text to family members right before he did it with instructions. I knew I wanted to find out what I could and write about it. While I was researching I came upon an article in DeadSpin  by Rob Trucks who had actually interviewed Duerson three months before his death and Rob does a good job of showing the readers where Dave Duerson's head was in November of 2010. Since Rob Trucks actually interviewed him how can I do the story justice by given you my spin on second hand knowledge? I cannot so hear you go. An interview with the late Dave Duerson as told to Rob Trucks.

Football 101 - Uniform Numbers by Kim Rogers

Ladies, all players wear uniforms [jerseys] with numbers, so learning the numbering system will make it much easier to follow what’s happening on the field, therefore taking another step in fully understanding the great game of football.
The NFL adopted a jersey-numbering system in 1973 where each position corresponds to a range of numbers.
Covering the full range 1 to 99, the numbers are displayed on both the front and back of the jersey, on both shoulders, and often on the helmet.  The numbers worn on the sleeve or shoulder are known as "TV numbers" so the TV analyst can quickly identify the player for the broadcast.
Below is the numbering system the NFL has used since 1973:
1 - 19 are worn by quarterbacks, kickers, and punters. Since 2004, wide receivers are also allowed to wear numbers between 10 and 19 if they choose, even if a number from 80 through 89 is available.
20 - 49 are worn by running backs, tight ends (40-49, when an 80-89 number is unavailable), cornerbacks and safeties.
50 - 59 are worn by linebackers, defensive linemen and offensive linemen.
60 - 79 are worn by members of both the offensive line (the tackles, guards and centers) and defensive line (the defensive ends, defensive tackles or nose guard).
80 - 89 are worn by wide receivers and tight ends.
90 - 99 are worn by linebackers and defensive linemen.
0 - 00 are no longer used, though they were issued in the NFL before the number standardization in 1973.
The NFL numbering system is based on a player's primary position. If a player changes primary positions during his career, he does not usually have to change his number unless he changes from an eligible receiver to ineligible or vice versa.
In preseason games, when teams have expanded rosters, players may wear numbers that are outside of the above rules. When the final 53-player roster is established, they are reissued numbers within the guidelines.
Players have often asked the NFL for an exception to the numbering system rule. In 2006, New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush requested to keep the number 5 he wore in college. His request was declined, and he was assigned number 25 by the team.  Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth wore number #44 in college for the University of Oklahoma and wore that number during the 1987 preseason with the Seahawks. He took the NFL to court for the right to wear #44, but he lost and had to switch to #55.
So now I hope you have a better understanding of the NFL numbering system for uniform jerseys.

Another Successful Playoff Run and More Awards For the Newman Smith Trojan Football Team

For those of you not keeping up (and you know who you are), the Newman Smith Trojan football program has done a 180 the past two seasons. After 30 years of futility and one playoff appearances, coach Paul Ressa (who played on the loan playoff team in 1983) has given students, faculty and alumni a reason to be proud when talking about high school football.

In 2009 Smith made it to the Regional finals, losing a heart breaker to Longview who moved up to 5a in 2010 and lost the state semi finals, by one point.  So, if there was ever any doubt how good the 2009 Trojans were I think Longview answered them with their successful move up.

The 2009 Trojans had 25 seniors and 13 received scholarships!  No wonder the Trojans had high expectations before the 2010 season but they seemed to be snake bit in the regular season from game one when they had first down and the ball with less than two minutes and the only way they could lose is to turn the ball over which is what happened and Keller Central took it in for the win. The injury bug and grades had coach Ressa and the Trojans down to 37 players on the varsity roster at one point.  Most of the Trojan starters went both ways so big leads against teams such as eventual district champion Frisco Liberty evaporated in the second half when the Trojan players wore down from being on the field so much.

When the playoffs began it was like a different team and a new season.  The team seemed to play with much more confidence and energy.  If not for a no call on a John Tyler player who tackled  a Trojan receiver after he had called fair catch we may have seen Smith in their second regional final in a row. I  think a deep playoff run three years in a row would legitimize the Newman Smith Trojans as a state 4a power and there is no reason to think otherwise.  Coach Ressa said "We need to find a quarterback spring training because Jose Martinez graduated but we are very deep everywhere else".

With success more awards and scholarships have come the Trojans' way. Three seniors have already received football scholarships. Braxton Bearden (SFA), Zach Smith (SE Oklahoma) and DJ Johnson (Benedictine). Coach Ressa expects seven more Trojans to have Football scholarships by the time next fall rolls around. They are Alex Fogle, Levi Garza, Jose Marinez, Trai Pickney, Mitch Prosser, Thomas Vollmer and Jaqueal Walker.  Below is a list of Trojan football Players who received all district and all state awards for their play on the field and the class room.

Football -101 For Women, Offense & Defense by Kim Rogers

Article one in a 10-part series

Ladies, I am dedicating this column to helping you better understand the greatness of football by explaining the different positions that make up the team.
Each team has 11 players on the field at one time.  One team is playing offense while the other is playing defense, except on fourth down when the special teams unit for each team plays.
Offensive Positions  The offensive team begins a play from scrimmage in possession of the ball. The goal of offensive team is to score points.   Below are the positions that make up the offense:
  • QuarterbackThe player who receives the ball from the center at the start of each play before either handing it to the running back, throwing it to a receiver or running with it himself.  The quarterback is usually the player in charge of running the offense on the field. He is also the guy that usually informs the offense of the play while in the huddle.
  • Running back
He lines up in the backfield and generally is responsible for carrying the ball on run plays. While a running back's primary role is to run with the football, he is also used as a receiver at times.  Also referred to as a halfback.
  • Fullback
He lines up in the offensive backfield and generally is responsible for run-blocking for the running back and pass-blocking for the quarterback. Fullbacks are usually bigger than halfbacks, and also serve as short-yardage runners.
  • Wide Receiver
This player lines up on or near the line of scrimmage, but split to the outside. His primary job is to catch passes from the quarterback.
  • Tight End
This player serves as a receiver and also a blocker. The tight end lines up beside the offensive tackle either to the right or to the left of the quarterback.
  • Offensive Tackle
Making up the offensive line, there are two tackles on every play and they line up on the outside of the offensive guards.  Their function is to block on both running and passing plays.
  • Offensive Guard
Another part of the offensive line, two guards line up on either side of the offensive center.  They also block on both running and passing plays.
  • Center
The offensive lineman who hikes (or snaps) the ball to the quarterback at the start of each play. The center lines up in the middle of the offensive line, between the offensive guards.

Defensive Positions
The defensive team is not in possession of the ball and their goal is to prevent the other team from scoring. Below are the positions that make up the defense:
  • Defensive EndThis player lines up at the end of the defensive line. His job is to contain the running back on running plays to the outside, and rush the quarterback on passing plays.
  • Defensive Tackle
This player lines up on the interior of the defensive line. His duties include stopping the running back on running plays, getting pressure up the middle on passing plays and occupying blockers so the linebackers can roam free.
  • Nose Tackle
This guy lines up directly across from the center. Also known as the nose guard, his primary responsibilities are to stop the run and occupy the offensive lineman to keep them from blocking the linebackers.
  • Linebacker
This guy lines up behind the defensive linemen and in front of the defensive backfield, performing various duties including rushing the passer, covering receivers and defending against the run.
  • Cornerback
This guy lines up on the outside of the formation and is usually assigned to cover a wide receiver, preventing them from catching the ball by swatting it away or catching the pass themselves. In rushing situations, their job is to contain the rusher.
  • Safety
The safeties are the last line of defense (farthest from the line of scrimmage) and usually help the cornerbacks with deep-pass coverage.
Special teams
Special teams are units that are on the field during kickoffs, free kicks, punts, field goal and extra point attempts. Most special teams players are second- and third-string players from other positions.  Special teams are unique in that they can serve as offensive or defensive units and that they are only seen sporadically throughout a game.
  • Placekicker
Placekicker or kicker is the player who is responsible for the kicking duties of field goals, extra points, and often kickoffs.
  • Punter
On a fourth down, a punter receives the snapped ball directly from the line of scrimmage and then punts (kicks) the football to the opposing team so as to limit any field position advantage. Punters can also ‘fake punt’ in those same situations, by throwing or running the football instead of punting to achieve a first down.
  • Kickoff Specialist
A kickoff specialist kicks the ball in the kickoff. Due to roster restrictions, most NFL teams do not have a Kickoff Specialist, and instead use their punters or kickers on kickoffs.
  • Long Snapper
This is a player who is a specialized center during punts, field goals and extra point attempts. His job is to snap the ball as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Holder
Positioned between seven and eight yards behind the line of scrimmage, this player receives the snap during field goal and extra point attempts.
  • Punt Returner
This guy catches the ball after it is punted and to give his team good field position (or a touchdown if possible) by returning it.
  • Kickoff Returner
This guy is primarily responsible to catch kickoffs and attempts to return them in the opposite direction.

Now that you better understand the positions that make up a football team, I hope this will help you enjoy watching games!

Storms in Europe have created larger than normal waves for surfers

Check out Benjamen Sanchis take on this Monster wave in Europe where the waves are usually considered "soft" compared to those in places like northern California and Maui. A rash of storms this winter have made the waves more challenging and Sanchis is the favorite to win in multiple categories of the Billabong XXL global Big Wave awards after  this awesome ride!

Golf Channel Sends Jim Gray Packing at Northern Trust Open

I figured that Jim Gray would pop off to the wrong athlete one day and get knocked out. Or, maybe I just hoped that would happen after he ambushed the great Pete Rose with questions about his gambling at an inappropriate time and place, Game 2 of the World Series after he had been introduced as one of the All Century Team members.  Pete Rose was there to answer questions about the All Century Team and Gray not only ambushed "Charlie Hustle", he never let up.

Jim Gray has had many run ins with athletes over the years.  The way he treated Pete at the World Series in 1999 makes perfect sense now.  Jim Gray has very little talent and the only way for him to move up was to be the arrogant jerk he is when he is working.  I hope this move by the Golf Channel is just the beginning  of the end for Mr. Gray.  If the other networks put a leash on Gray and his "National Enquirer" style of reporting, his lack of talent and knowledge will be exposed.  Jim Gray's talent is to infuriate athletes so the spot light is put on Jim Gray for ruffling feathers.  Mr. Gray wont be on cable access for his knowledge of any sport.

Is this reporting or crossing the line?

Almost every week day at 5:30am I turn the coffee pot on, feed my dogs and log on to my laptop where I have yahoo.com as my home page. I usually scan the headlines making sure that nobody has blown anybody up over night and I read their sports articles while I enjoy my java. Today there is a story about Blake Griffin. Blake Griffin for those who don't know is a one man wrecking crew for the Los Angeles Clippers. He was an all american at Oklahoma and drafted #1 in the 2009. He was MVP in the rookie league that year but a stress fracture sidelined him for the regular NBA season. This year he is putting on nightly dunking clinics across the NBA. He is predicted to win the dunk contest all star weekend and he will walk away with the rookie of the year award. There are plenty of things a sports writer could write about Blake Griffin who is a model citizen but Kelly Dwyer of yahoo sports couldn't find anything better to write about Griffin than The National Observer could have if they had a reporter in the locker room. Griffin had just taken a call and found out a good friend from back home had passed. Griffin sat head in his hands crying moments after a win over the Timberwolves. About that time the reporters were let in. It's my opinion that if a reporter sees a player in this kind of distress they should give him a little space and find something else to write about besides his tragedy. There are plenty of sports to write about Kelly Dwyer. Is it really necessary to let the world no Blake Griffin was crying in the locker room after the game due to the loss of a friend or should that be a private moment?

Iowa Wrestler Forfeits Match Instead of Wrestling a Female Counterpart in State Tournament

It is my opinion that girls can compete in any sport boys do. Just ask my friend Jen Welter who has been playing professional woman's football for 11 seasons.  I do believe that do to the physiological make up of males and females they should not be competing against each other in full contact sports. I mean does anybody really want to see a man and woman go at it in MMA, boxing or wrestling? I would like to believe that most people would not find it fair or entertaining but in the state of Iowa they have been making the girls compete with the boys for eleven years. That is if they wish to wrestle. Hello Mcfly! It's 2011 why do the girls not have their own teams and tournaments with everything equal with what the boys have? The reason it's been able to go on for two decades without a lot of people giving it a second thought is a girl had never made the state tournament. That is until this year where two girls have made the tournament . Both in the 112 pound class. Casey Herkelman a freshman at Cedar Falls and Megan Black of  Ottumwa (Iowa) High. Casey Herkelman became the first girl to win a match in the state tournament when one of the favorites in the weight class Joel Northrup reported and withdrew from the match or in other words forfeited. This way he earned a loss but was able to continue wrestling but can do no better than third. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and Megan [Black] and their accomplishments," Northrup said in a statement given to the media following his official forfeit. "However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times.
"As a matter of conscience and faith, I do not believe that it is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."  It seems that Joel has a much better grasp of right and wrong that the adults running high school wrestling in Iowa. Northrup could be faced with the same scenario later in the tournament. Northrup is in the losers bracket after his forfeit and will be wrestling  losers from the winners bracket  so he could easily be matched with black or Herkelman. Another forfeit and he is done. The sad thing about it is Northrup was a 3rd place finisher last year as a freshman. Would anyone expect Laila Ali to be matched with Wladimir Klitschko? The fight would never be sanctioned but in the state of Iowa Joel Northrup had to forfeit any chance at a state title this year because to win a state title he was going to have to do something he had been taught was wrong. Engage a girl in combat. I think the governing body of high school wrestling in Iowa owes young Mr. Northup an apology.

Shades of Darvin Ham!

This reminds me of Darvin Ham from Texas Tech smashing the back board against North Carolina in route to Tech's1996 sweet 16 appearance. By the way. What has happened in Lubbock?

Madden Video Game Predicts Super Bowl Winner!

EA sports has used the Madden video game to predict the winner of the Super Bowl the past seven years and has been correct six out of seven times. The lone wrong prediction was the Giants upset of the unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII which might be the biggest upset in Super Bowl History. Check out Madden 11's prediction for Super Bowl XLV and how close the Madden video game point spread predictions have been over the past seven years.

Herschel Walker

When I was 18 and a senior in high school I thought Herschel Walker might be the greatest college running back ever. At the age of 47 I have come to realize Hershel Walker is much more than that. Hershel Walker might just have the most longevity of any world class athlete in the history of any sport. If you think Brett Favre is an iron man take a look at Walker. At the age of 48 he is competing at a high level in the MMA beating guys that were not born when he won the Heisman trophy.

Who is Jason Cole

Jason Cole says JaMarcus Russell has more cred than Jay Cutler. JaMarcus Russell? The same guy that got arrested for rolling down the road drinking cough syrup? I guess the fact that Cutler couldn't plant and throw means nothing. How about this Jason. Maybe Cutler knew he would be hurting his team if he played. Something Favre and many more "tough" guys never learned. If Cutler would have run out one more time and limped off the field everybody would be happy. That's what's so ridiculous. We hear all the time "a professional athlete knows his body". Does Jason think he knows Cutler's body better then Cutler himself? Personally I think Cutler has one of the strongest arms in the league but makes poor decisions. If Jason wants to rag on Jay for making dumb decisions I have no problem with it but if he is actually going to put JaMarcus Russell in the same area code as Jay Cutler as far as credibility with team mates we should all send our resumes into yahoo sports because they are hurting for writers that have original thoughts so they employee writers with less credibility than Joseph McCarthy.

Girls High School Basketball score 108-3

Don't we hear of score every year in high school basketball weather it be boys or girls that that one team scores triple digits and the other one scores single digits and people all across America are appalled? Should any kid have to endure a loss like that? No! When I was 9 years old I was on a baseball team that won a game 32-3,....after 4 innings. There was a ten run rule that kept us from beating the poor kids 64-6. I think a forty point rule would be a good rule for high school basketball. If a team is up by more than forty points at half time or anytime after half time the game is over. I would be willing to bet that teams down by more than forty points at half time or in the second half have a below 1% chance of coming back based up on a sample of all high school basketball games ever played. This would save the kids the embarrassment of first getting beat so bad and then the national media making a big deal about it. We can't always depend on the adults to do the right thing I think the rule will make sure the right thing is done.

Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati or he is going to retire?

Retire or shut up Carson Palmer. You get paid millions to play a game and you are under contract to play that game.. If you are tired of starting quarterback money retire. I am sure you can make a prety good living on television.
