400 Pound American Sumo Champion Finishes Marathon While Breaking Record

Kelly Gneiting is a three time " U.S. National Sumo Champion", who placed fifth at the 2006 world championships in Japan. He is now the world record holder as heaviest person to ever run a marathon and finish. In fact at 400 pounds he blew the former record holder of 275 pounds away. Gneiting who never doubted his ability to finish said, "I honestly think I'm one of the best athletes in the world," according to the LA Times. Gneiting had run a marathon in 2008 and finished in a time of 11 hours 52 seconds. He managed to beat that time by more than 2 hours running a time of 9 hours 48 minutes in the L.A. marathon. Gneiting said he became delirious from about the 10 mile marker on and had decided he would crawl to the finish if he had to.

Gillispie says Texas Tech is a "Great Fit".

New Texas Tech men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie thinks he will be successful as the Red Raiders head coach for multiple reasons. Gillispie said, "I'm a native Texan first of all. I'm a high school coach in this state. I coached at several different places in the college ranks in Texas, whether it's junior college or a major college, and I think it's just a great fit. I grew up as a Texas high school coach basically, and a lot of those guys are still coaching, and they're very, very dear friends and close friends. Spent time in the junior college ranks and developed a lot of relationships that are definitely going to help us in recruiting." If his track record at UTEP and Texas A&M are any indication, Red Raider basketball fans will see a difference immediately. Gillispie took both schools to the post season within the first two seasons he got there. His second season at UTEP, the Minors went 24-8 and to the NCAA tournament. His first year at Texas A&M the Aggies went 21-10 and earned a bid to the NIT tournament. The next two seasons Gillispie lead the Aggies to the NCAA tournament reaching the "sweet sixteen"  in 2006-2007 with a 27-7 record. Texas Tech basketball has seen a dip in success since Bobby Knight stepped down as the head basketball coach. If Gillispie's track record at the universities in the state of Texas is any indication, that is about to change

Football...a true love affair: A little about Kim Rogers, our football 101 author by Kim Rogers

Earlier this week my friend Shannan wrote on my Facebook page that I should be the sports correspondent on the g3 site.  Well guess what happened today?  Miss Kdee called and asked me to join the g3 team to write a sports column!  I am such a big sports fan, and I love to write, so this truly is an honor to have this forum.

I like most all sports, but it is football – specifically NFL football – that I am most passionate about.  Although I do enjoy college football, I find NFL football most exciting.  Many people [like our own KellyB] prefer college football, but for me there is no comparison!

Those of you who are my friend on Facebook, or who follow me on Twitter, know that I often include a sports reference in my status updates.  I have a coworker, Steven, who does not like sports and he told me I make too many posts about sports!  Seriously?  That is who I am!  He actually clicked the “less Kim” button and said that once football season is over, he will click the “more Kim” button.  Little does he know that I will continue to post about sports even when football season is over.  After all, sports – specifically football – is what consumes me!

Believe me, I realize that many other people besides Steven think I am crazy for being so passionate about something that most girls don't know much about.  I try to pinpoint when my love affair with football began, but I simply can’t.  Football was just always on the TV on Sundays when I was growing up in Dallas.  The affair grew stronger each year as I learned more and more about the game.  Even now I still learn new things, and every year my love grows deeper and deeper.

If you like football, hopefully you will enjoy my quips about the great game.  If you don’t, maybe they will help you understand what inspires your husband, father, brother and even mother and sister to be such a fan.

Jon Jones Takes Robber Down Hours Before Light Heavyweight Champonship Bout

Just hours before light heavyweight contender Jon Jones was to fight for the UFC championship of the world, he and two of his trainers, Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn spotted a man breaking into a car and stealing objects. When they started yelling at the man to stop, the robber took off running. Jones, Jackson and Winkeljohn  followed him on foot. The thief eventually fell down and by the time he was able to get up and continue running Jones had caught up to him and tripped him. According to Jackson he "foot swept" the suspect. With the robber on the ground Jackson yelled to his fighter to stay away. The suspect tried to get up so Jackson  said he "double-legged" him , jumped on top of him and applied an arm bar. Winkeljohn went after the other arm so the robber would not have a weapon. Shortly after the scuffle police showed up and arrested the thief. About 7 1/2 hours later Jones took on Mauricio Rua for the UFC  light heavyweight championship which he won. Not a bad day's work, Mr. Jones.

Just for Fun: My March Madness Championship Game Predictions. Who will be there and who will Win?

Like a lot of you this week I filled out my March Madness bracket. I have been doing brackets for 20+ years and in all those years I have had only one season of glory. In 2009 I was in a bracket that cost 20 dollars a person and paid 2600 plus for first place. The reason I mention this is so you have an idea how many people were in it. I was the only person that had Michigan St. playing North Carolina in the final. I had North Carolina winning which they did pretty easily. Believe it or not, it was a very surreal moment. I had won my bracket! I know there are other teams that have as good of a chance or better than both of the following teams. Kansas played consistent all season. Kansas was 32-2 and played in one of the best conferences in the country. Kentucky is much like Michigan in 2009 as far as the way they are playing down the stretch. They won the SEC tournament which is, and has always been one of the premier basketball conferences in the country for many years. They have won their last six games which included Florida twice, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Not exactly patsy row. Since February 15th the Wildcats are 8-1. So take it for what it's worth. The odds of me winning another bracket in my lifetime are probably not quite so high but you just never know. Good luck to all of you. I hope we have a lot of winners!

Kentucky @ Kansas

Winner: Kansas

Football 101 For Women- Understanding Downs by Kim Rogers Part 4 of a 10 Part Series

Ladies, this Football 101 column will be dedicated to helping you better understand the game of football by explaining the differences between and purposes of first down, second down, third down and fourth down.  This is probably the biggest key to understanding football, so if you grasp this, you’ll be watching football like an expert in no time!!The offensive team [the team in possession of the ball] has four attempts, or chances, to move the ball ten yards. These attempts are called downs.  From the time the ball is snapped, or put into play, to the time the play is whistled over by the officials, is considered one down.  Once the ball has moved ten yards or more from the starting point of play, the team gets a fresh set of four new downs to try to move the ball another ten yards. If the ball doesn’t move ten yards forward in four downs, the other team gets possession of the ball (the offense also has the option of kicking [punting] the ball to the other team on the fourth down).
The first play of a series is called first and 10 because it is the first down and 10 yards are needed to receive a new set of four downs.
Suppose on the first play, the team on offense picks up three yards. The next play would then be second and 7, because it is the second play of the set and they still need seven yards to get a first down [and a new set of four downs].
If they were to pick up six yards on the second play it would leave them one yard shy of a first down, therefore setting up a third and 1 situation because it would be the third play of the series and they would still need one yard to get a first down.
If the team with the ball can pick up one yard or more on the third down play, then they will be given a first down, which means they get to start all over with a new set of four downs.
A team can continue moving the football down the field as long as they continue to pick up first downs.
On occasion the yards to go may be a number other than 10, due to a penalty.
Third down with a significant distance to go (usually over 15 or 20 yards) is known as third and long.  This term is also often used in everyday life as a metaphor for a desperate situation that demands risky actions be taken.
Fourth down with less than one yard to go is referred to as fourth and inches. This is often used in tense situations where the offense is tempted to scrimmage the ball rather than kick for a chance to get another first down.
First down, where the goal line is the line to gain, is known as first and goal.  A team cannot make another first down (barring a defensive penalty) without actually scoring.
Fourth-down Strategies
If a team fails to gain the required yardage on third down, a team basically has 3 options on fourth down:
• The majority of the time, teams will "punt" the ball away on fourth down. A punt is simply a form of kicking the ball that gives possession of the ball to the other team, but also pushes them back considerably farther away from the end zone.
• A team can "go for it" on fourth down and try to pick up the remaining yardage, but they run the risk of turning the ball over to the other team if they do not get to the first down marker. If they do not get the required yardage, the other team takes possession of the ball at the spot of the last tackle and now has four downs to move 10 yards back in the other direction.
• Another option is to kick a field goal. If a team feels they are close enough to kick the ball between the upright bars of the goal post in their opponent's endzone, they may attempt a field goal, which is worth three points.
After a Score
• After a team scores via a touchdown or field goal, they kick off to the other team and the process begins all over again.

Ladies, I hope this info makes sense.  Watching football on Sundays is a great way to spend time with the man you love – and believe me, he will get a kick out of you taking interest in and enjoying football!!

Chris Johnson to NFL Owners: " Boy they need to let me kno what's gonna happen with this NFL lockout cause if they do ima join the us track team."

Chris Johnson ran a 4.24 forty yard dash as a senior at the NFL combine. It is the fastest forty ever recorded at an NFL combine. Chris Johnson expressed his desire to "try out" for the U.S. track team if there is an NFL work stoppage through his twitter account on March 9th, 2011. Running the fastest forty time of any football player at an NFL combine is one thing but running against the best sprinters in the world is a whole different thing. Isn't it? According to ESPN's "Sports Science" Chris Johnson's 40 yard dash was faster than Usain Bolt's first forty yards (sprinters usually reach top speed between 50-60 yds) of his world record 100 meter dash. I have heard the argument that football speed and track speed are two different things and that is true, but if Chris Johnson has enough God given ability to run faster than Bolt did the first forty yards of his world record 100 meter dash, then we're not talking about just any fast football player. Why shouldn't Chris Johnson give it a shot if the NFL has a work stoppage? Bob Hayes won an Olympic gold medal in the 100 yard dash in 1964, set the world record in  and won a Super Bowl championship with the Dallas Cowboys in 1972. Willie Gault won a gold medal on the 1984 Olympic 400 meter sprint relay team and later won a Super Bowl championship on one of the greatest teams in NFL history. The 1985 Chicago Bears. Like Johnson, Hayes and Gault were football players that had enough speed to compete on a world class level. Chris Johnson knows where his living should be made. All he is saying is let him know what's going. If there isn't going to be a season he would like to explore his options. Just like any of us would if the company we worked for told us we didn't have a job because they had decided to shut down shop for a  year. I hope we are watching Chris Johnson run for the Tennessee Titans next year, but if they don't play ball let's see what Johnson can do on the track. We will need something to watch besides Charlie Sheen.

Texas Tech Basketball coach Pat Knight fired?

Story out of Lubbock Texas: Sources have told Chris Level that Pat Knight has been fired! The season that started with high expectations and a lot of experienced seniors has ended abruptly for Pat Knight. A blow up in a press conference last week which Knight hinted his time in Lubbock was coming to end, has apparently come to pass. A 13-18  (5-11 conference) record by a team that was expected to contend in the Big 12 race seems to have brought an end to coaching tenure at Texas Tech. It is unclear if Knight will coach the Red Raiders when the Red Raiders play the number 6 seed Missouri Tigers this Wednesday.

Footbal 101 for Women- Scoring Part 3 of 10 By Kim Rogers

Ladies, do you try to watch football but find you have no clue what is going on?  You’ve heard of touchdowns and field goals, but do you know how they are made and how many points they each bring?  Help is here as this column was designed to give you a better understanding.
Touchdown
To score a touchdown, one team must take the football into the opposite end zone. This can be done by having a player run the football forward into the end zone. It can also be done when a receiver catches a pass in the end zone or catches the ball prior to the end zone and runs it in.  This would still be considered a "passing" touchdown as opposed to a "rushing" touchdown.
A touchdown is worth six points. The scoring team is also awarded the opportunity for an extra point or a two-point conversion.  Afterwards, the team scoring the touchdown kicks off to the opposing team.
Touchdowns are usually scored by the offense. However, the defense can also score a touchdown if they have recovered a fumble or an interception and return it to the opposing end zone. Special teams can score a touchdown on a kickoff or punt return, or on a return after a missed or blocked field goal attempt or blocked punt.
Extra point
This is played immediately after a touchdown during which the scoring team is allowed to attempt to score an extra one point by kicking or two points by touchdown.  An extra point is also referred to as a conversion, point after touchdown (sometimes abbreviated as PAT), or point after.  If the kick goes through the uprights, the team gets an additional one point for their touchdown, bringing their total for that score from six points to seven.
Two-point conversion
In a two-point conversion attempt, the team that just scored must run a play from close to the opponent's goal line and advance the ball across the goal line in the same manner as if they were scoring a touchdown. If the team succeeds, it earns two additional points on top of the six points for the touchdown. If the team fails, no additional points are scored. In either case, the team proceeds to a kickoff.  The ability to score a two-point conversion was added to NCAA football in 1958 and the NFL in 1994.
Field goal
A field goal must pass "through the uprights," a 10 feet crossbar with upright posts that are 18 feet 6 inches apart.  A missed field goal is said to be "no good."  If it misses to the kicker's left it is referred to as "wide left" and conversely "wide right" if it misses to the kicker's right. It may also be described as being "short" if it does not have the distance to go through the uprights.
Safety
A safety is a type of score worth two points where a team not in possession of the football can score points. A safety may occur in a variety of ways, most commonly when an opponent in possession of the football is tackled in his own end zone.  An official signals a safety by holding his hands above his head, palms touching.
A safety is by far the least common type of score.  No NFL team has ever recorded more than four in one season. Safeties usually occur when the offense starts a play close to its own end zone. In such cases, offenses tend to run very conservative, low-risk plays to avoid a safety.
Free kick
After a safety, the team that gave up the points kicks off to the other team from its own 20-yard line.  The kicking team has the option of employing a punt or a drop kick, and a punt is the most commonly chosen option.  Unlike the kickoff, a kicking tee may not be used.

Now that you have a better understanding how touchdowns and field goals are scored, watching football will be so much more fun – trust me!

Dave Duerson: A Sad End to a Great Life

If you were a football fan in the mid 80's chances are you knew who Dave Duerson was. He played defensive back for the '85 bears who won Super Bowl XX and is recognized as one of the greatest teams in NFL history. He later won another Super Bowl with the Giants in Super Bowl XXV. In 1986 he set an NFL record for most sacks by a defensive back, (7) and had the record until 2005. When I had heard he had killed himself by shooting himself in the chest so his brain would be spared for studies of long term affects of head trauma and that he had sent a text to family members right before he did it with instructions. I knew I wanted to find out what I could and write about it. While I was researching I came upon an article in DeadSpin  by Rob Trucks who had actually interviewed Duerson three months before his death and Rob does a good job of showing the readers where Dave Duerson's head was in November of 2010. Since Rob Trucks actually interviewed him how can I do the story justice by given you my spin on second hand knowledge? I cannot so hear you go. An interview with the late Dave Duerson as told to Rob Trucks.
